Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
