PSG Defeats Marseille on Penalties to Secure Trophee des Champions Super Cup in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now won the season-opening trophy on 14 separate times.

Paris Saint-Germain required a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to get past Marseille in Kuwait and secure a fourth straight French Super Cup title.

The Champions League holders seemed to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the match between the Ligue 1 winners and the French Cup winners after Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring in the opening stages.

However, the southern French side fired twice in the closing moments to seize a shock lead. First, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos snatched a crucial leveler in the final moments to force the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the hero, stopping crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all scored with composure for PSG to complete a convincing shootout win.

Now 14-time champions Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now lifted this competition for the 12th time in the last 13 years.
