Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but inside Together resides a profound examination about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He fears the notion of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that come with most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
