Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using such medications should be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle support.
